# Global Wayfinding Meditation — Source Map and Provenance

**Artifact version:** 1.0
**Prepared:** 2026-09-01
**Status:** Companion audit record for the Global Wayfinding Practice Atlas
**Canonical upstream work:** [Meditation from Cold Start to Complete Mastery: a Manual of Global Wayfinding Meditation](https://meditationbook.page/)

## How to read this record

This file is the audit trail behind the Practice Atlas. It answers four questions:

1. Which exact version of the living source was studied?
2. Where does each important interpretation come from?
3. Which statements belong to the author, which are this project's synthesis, and which remain contested or open?
4. How should the artifacts be checked when the upstream work changes?

It is not a substitute for the source. Follow the links when wording, context, safety, or a contested claim matters. The source is unusually recursive, dialogical, and self-revising; extracting one paragraph can invert the function it serves in the whole.

## Pinned source

| Commit date | 2026-07-12 |
| Commit subject | `added to both bibs` |
| Raw source file | `index.md` |

| Snapshot size | 1,922,897 bytes; 17,109 source lines |

The revision identifies repository history; the checksum identifies the exact bytes analyzed. Both are necessary because the website describes itself as a living work in progress.

## Method

The source was reconstructed at four resolutions:

- **Structural pass:** headings and anchors were extracted to map the book's topology rather than relying on its rendered order alone.
- **Whole-system pass:** the warnings, anti-reification frame, goal, end-state, goodness/better, practice ecology, p2, body/self-trust, practice-in-life, technical debt, nonmonotonicity, ordering, force, effort, undoing, and later dialogues were read as one causal system.
- **Focal pass:** the meta-protocol, meta-meta protocol, and global-wayfinding sections were analyzed line by line and cross-checked against their later qualifications and critiques.
- **Adversarial pass:** interpretations were tested against passages that resist them—especially the text's warnings about totalization, homunculi, singular goodness, force, effortlessness, direct reification, and the idea that worsening proves progress.

The map below records the minimum anchor set required to reconstruct the atlas. It is selective, not exhaustive. Omitted sections may still matter to a particular question.

## Epistemic legend

| Label | Meaning in these artifacts |
|---|---|
| **SOURCE** | Directly stated or strongly implied by the pinned source. This identifies provenance, not truth or scientific consensus. |
| **SYNTHESIS** | A reconstruction connecting multiple source passages. It should be traceable but may not use the author's own formulation. |
| **ADAPTATION** | A usability or safety choice introduced by this project. It is not attributed to the author. |
| **CRITIQUE** | An internal or external challenge that changes how a claim should be held. |
| **OPEN** | An unresolved empirical, conceptual, practical, or interpretive question. |

These labels prevent three common errors: turning an author's speculation into fact, mistaking the atlas's organization for the source's own organization, and presenting a practical adaptation as the one correct way to enact the work.

## Section-by-section source map

### Frame, purpose, and epistemic caution

| ID | Source and anchor | Role in the system | Interpretive caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| `document-meta-warning` | [Document-level meta-warning](https://meditationbook.page/#document-level-meta-warning) | **SOURCE:** Treats the document itself as a potentially totalizing and suggestive object. | The atlas must not claim ownership over all introspection or goodness. |
| `risks` | [Risks: maximally cautious warnings/directives](https://meditationbook.page/#risks-maximally-cautious-warnings-directives-first-) | **SOURCE:** Places warnings before the detailed practice theory. | Conservative author guidance is not the same as population-level risk evidence. |
| `risk-mechanisms` | [What makes it risky?](https://meditationbook.page/#but-what-actually-makes-it-risky-how-do-risks-obtai) | **SOURCE:** Proposes destabilization, feedback, and load-bearing-structure mechanisms. | Mechanistic confidence exceeds the documented evidence base in places. |
| `direct-reification` | [Preconceiving, direct reifying](https://meditationbook.page/#preconceiving-direct-reifying-draft) | **SOURCE:** Warns that maps can precondition or fabricate the experience they describe. | A highly detailed guide can itself become a source of reification. |
| `goal` | [Goal (draft)](https://meditationbook.page/#goal-draft) | **SOURCE:** Places the ultimate aim in a broadly good life for oneself and cared-for beings. | “Good” remains personal, relational, broad, and deliberately underdefined. |
| `goodness` | [No fixed goal, part one: goodness](https://meditationbook.page/#no-fixed-conceptualized-goal-or-end-state-part-one-) | **SOURCE:** Uses goodness as a heuristic able to evolve with practice. | Do not convert goodness into one internal scalar or mood measure. |
| `better` | [No fixed goal, part two: better](https://meditationbook.page/#no-fixed-conceptualized-goal-or-end-state-part-two-) | **SOURCE:** Describes better-ing as multidimensional, nonmonotonic, global, and increasingly concrete. | The direction is not a fixed ladder with universal stages. |

### Capacity, embodiment, and the practice/life boundary

| ID | Source and anchor | Role in the system | Interpretive caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| `preliminaries-vacations` | [Preliminaries and vacations; conceptualization as such](https://meditationbook.page/#preliminaries-and-vacations-conceptualization-as-su) | **SOURCE:** Preliminary practices expand degrees of freedom and feedback; vacations can reset or orbit stuck practice. | The same section contains a critique of calling every good habit part of the protocol. |
| `body-self-trust` | [Body, self-trust, sensory processing, meaning](https://meditationbook.page/#body-self-trust-sensory-processing-meaning) | **SOURCE:** Develops cross-checking among symbolic, tacit, sensory, affective, and embodied information. | Felt information is trainable and fallible, not mystically infallible. |
| `practice-life` | [Practice in daily life or no?](https://meditationbook.page/#practice-in-daily-life-or-no) | **SOURCE:** Recommends bounded formal practice and ordinary living while allowing their eventual indirect integration. | “Practice everywhere” can become extra monitoring and management. |

### Local enactment and self-correction

| ID | Source and anchor | Role in the system | Interpretive caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| `p2-onramp` | [Guided on-ramp for main practice p2](https://meditationbook.page/#guided-on-ramp-for-main-practice-p2-draft) | **SOURCE:** Interleaves wandering, noticing, contextual good/bad discrimination, gentle willing, surrender, and releasing unsuccessful trying. | The source's quoted “good” and “bad” signal provisional, contextual judgment. |
| `meta-protocol` | [Meta protocol](https://meditationbook.page/#meta-protocol) | **SOURCE:** Examines what is happening, what is being done, how each seems good/bad/uncertain, how one knows, and what else may be possible. | It can be retrospective, nonverbal, dyadic, partial, or absent; grinding through the questions defeats it. |
| `meta-meta` | [Meta meta protocol](https://meditationbook.page/#meta-meta-protocol) | **SOURCE:** Applies the protocol to its own framing and use. | Recursion should lighten and eventually dissolve the protocol, not install an infinite supervisor. |

### Path shape, ordering, and undoing

| ID | Source and anchor | Role in the system | Interpretive caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| `nonmonotonicity` | [Nonmonotonicity](https://meditationbook.page/#nonmonotonicity) | **SOURCE:** Describes mixed trajectories in which some domains improve while difficult material appears to worsen or uncoil later. | **ADAPTATION:** Deterioration is never treated as proof that practice is working. |
| `ordering` | [Ordering matters](https://meditationbook.page/#ordering-matters-order-matters) | **SOURCE:** Argues that fine-grained, personal ordering of moves matters and cannot be completely prescribed. | The “perfect ordering” metaphor is itself qualified: there is no usable literal god's-eye sequence. |
| `force-redo-undo` | [A note on force and redo-to-undo](https://meditationbook.page/#a-note-on-force-plus-a-brief-mention-of-redo-to-und) | **SOURCE:** Allows that latent force may sometimes surface and complete in the course of undoing. | This is not permission to induce, intensify, or push through force. |
| `effort` | [A brief note on effort](https://meditationbook.page/#a-brief-note-on-effort) | **SOURCE:** Relates effort to will/doing and effortlessness to surrender/undoing. | Effortlessness is a strong long-run heuristic, not an exceptionless command. |
| `undo` | [More on undo](https://meditationbook.page/#more-on-undo) | **SOURCE:** Frames undoing as recovering a previous freedom and doing differently, sometimes without a distinctive phenomenological marker. | Do not equate undoing with erasing history or discarding value. |
| `technical-debt-inverse-operations` | [Technical debt and inverse operations](https://meditationbook.page/#technical-debt-and-inverse-operations) | **SOURCE:** Explains layering, compensations, accumulated constraints, and why adding another improvement may preserve the deeper problem. | This is a broad causal metaphor/model, not a complete psychology or medical theory. |

### Global wayfinding and its internal critique

| ID | Source and anchor | Role in the system | Interpretive caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| `global-wayfinding` | [Implicit and explicit global wayfinding](https://meditationbook.page/#part-3-implicit-and-explicit-global-wayfinding-or-h) | **SOURCE:** Describes moving from a current state toward unknown better possibilities with fewer overall tradeoffs through indirect, revisable, sometimes backtracking routes. | “Global” expands relevant context; it does not provide omniscience or direct global action. |
| `plural-goods-critique` | [Dialogue on wayfinding, homunculi, parts, goodness, and agency](https://meditationbook.page/#a-dialogue-on-wayfinding-homunculi-parts-goodness-a) | **CRITIQUE:** Challenges a singular good-seeking manager with a distributed, multicentered picture of interlocking loci of good. | The critique is internal to the source and must remain visible beside more unitary rhetoric. |
| `pith-instructions` | [Pith instructions (experimental)](https://meditationbook.page/#pith-instructions-experimental) | **SOURCE:** Compresses patience, gentleness, non-force, surprise, and conditional allowance into reminders. | Compression can strip conditions and invite literalism; reconnect the pith to its safety and meta frames. |

## Claims intentionally not upgraded to fact

The atlas may explain these claims because they organize the source, but it must attribute and qualify them:

- that a roughly 10,000-hour path can reliably reach anything like “complete mastery”;
- that all relevant psychological or somatic technical debt is finite and can be exhaustively resolved;
- that there is one universal gradient, basin, attractor, or globally correct ordering for minds;
- that specific phenomenological or muscular changes have the causal meanings proposed in the source;
- that nonmonotonic worsening predictably precedes later uncoiling;
- that “undoing” maps cleanly to memory reconsolidation or any single established mechanism;
- that the source's end-state descriptions generalize across people;
- that intensive practice is safe or indicated for a particular person because the meta-protocol is available;
- that introspective goodness judgments can detect all distant effects or externalities.

These are **OPEN** or authorial **SOURCE** claims, not established conclusions. The distinction matters most where an inspiring global picture could justify excessive practice or discount contrary evidence.

## Internal and external critiques consulted

### Internal critiques

The source's own dialogues and warnings are part of its ground truth, not editorial noise. The atlas especially preserves:

- the document-level warning that the framework can become a totalizing memetic object;
- the suggestion that “going meta” may name a pre-existing human competence that does not belong to this protocol;
- the homunculus critique: a protocol can tacitly reinstall the central manager it says will disappear;
- the multicentered-good critique: a system may contain multiple interlocking loci of concern rather than one good-seeking sovereign;
- the admission that exact ordering and exhaustive claims are models qualified by nebulosity, groundlessness, and lack of a god's-eye view;
- the corrective that effort, will, force, surrender, and redo-to-undo all require context rather than binary moralization;
- the recognition that safety, monotonicity, and broad accessibility remain open research problems.

### External perspectives

- **CRITIQUE:** [Sasha Chapin's 2022 review](https://sashachapin.substack.com/p/review-meditation-from-cold-start) values technical debt and the meta-protocol while emphasizing the book's density, bizarre structure, radical unsupported claims, risks, and difficulty as a beginner manual. It is useful as an experienced reader's interpretive stress test, not as adjudication.
- **SYNTHESIS/CRITIQUE:** [An Overview of Global Wayfinding Meditation](https://autodereify.me/an-overview-of-global-wayfinding-meditation/) is a popular introduction linked by the source itself. It is useful for seeing what survives compression, but the pinned source remains authoritative about its own contents.
- **OPEN:** The source also links a 2026 long-horizon self-report. Self-reports can illuminate lived trajectories but cannot establish general efficacy or safety.

No external overview is used to override a direct contradiction in the pinned source. Where interpretations differ, the atlas presents the disagreement or returns to the primary passage.

## Derivative-edition notice

This project is a lightly transformative map and companion, not a replacement publication of the source. It prominently links the original and states its pinned revision because the original may change after publication. It is intended for noncommercial personal/reference use and is not sold.

The upstream copyright section should be consulted before redistribution or adaptation. This notice records the project's compliance intent; it is not legal advice.

To protect the original work's texture and reduce reification:

- the artifacts paraphrase rather than reproduce long passages;
- source anchors sit near interpretations;
- compact instructions keep their contextual qualifiers;
- the artifacts repeatedly direct readers back to the living source;
- the atlas distinguishes source wording from its own organizing vocabulary.

## Version drift and update procedure

Before treating the atlas as current:

1. Resolve the current default-branch revision of `meditationstuff/protocol_1`.
2. Fetch the current raw `index.md` and calculate SHA-256.
3. Compare both values with the pinned revision and checksum above.
4. If unchanged, record the check date; no interpretive update is required.
5. If changed, diff the prior and current source with special attention to all 22 mapped anchors, warnings, meta-protocol, meta-meta, global wayfinding, p2, goodness/better, force/effort/undoing, and the pluralist critique.
6. Classify each change as editorial, clarifying, additive, contradicting, or safety-relevant.
7. Update this map before updating the atlas, then regenerate the LLM capsule and HTML companion from the revised canonical atlas.
8. Rerun source-anchor, cross-artifact, offline, interaction, and safety tests.
9. Increment artifact versions and retain the old revision record.

Do not silently blend revisions. A future LLM should state when it is reasoning from this pinned snapshot and check the live source whenever the exact current wording or position could matter.
